The Use of Smart Speakers to Control Home Security Systems
I wrote this essay for an assignment in the Human-Centred Security course at the University of Glasgow.
The aim of this course is to explore the design and evaluation of usable, secure and privacy aware systems.
Throughout the course I began to foster an appreciation of the vital role played by human factors in securing systems.
Furthermore, I began to fully appreciate the multiple dimensions in the core principles of privacy, authentication, biometrics, risk communication, and the importance of security systems interface usability.
As a result, I was stimulated to develop my own, well-informed investigations on many of these topics.
This essay delves into my investigation on the potential usability, privacy and security issues that may occur when smart speakers (such as Amazon Alexa) are utilised to manage home security.
I also make recommendations for improvements that attempt to alleviate these issues, and I suggest solutions that incorporate a better understanding of human behaviour and the mitigation of common threats like social engineering.
Here is the essay prompt I received for the assignment:
- Smart speakers, such as Amazon Alexa, are increasingly being used to manage home security. This may include performing multiple relevant tasks, such as activating alarms or locking doors. Are any potential issues posed? Do any concerns need to be considered or addressed?
